Greece Residence Permit: Route Map, Evidence, and Online Filing
A Greek residence permit is granted for a specific legal purpose, not merely because an applicant can open the online platform. Start by identifying the employment, study, family, investment, exceptional, long-term, or other category that matches the facts. Then confirm its entry basis, eligibility, documents, filing authority, work rights, duration, and renewal rules. Greece's legal-migration platform supports specific tasks, but an online receipt is not the permit itself.
Choose the residence category and entry sequence first
The Ministry's third-country residence-permit categories separate permits by purpose and supporting documents. The Greek foreign ministry's official long-stay visa form separately identifies residence purposes including family reunion, employment, study/research/training, company staff, and investment. That distinction matters: many routes begin with the matching national-visa purpose before the residence-permit filing.
Build a route note before uploading anything:
| Fact pattern | Category family to verify | Core evidence question |
|---|---|---|
| Greek employer | Employed-worker or other job-specific residence category | The official employed-worker map says the ordinary route requires a national visa for employment and a residence permit for employment. Check the employer approval, contract, visa purpose, and post-entry file as one chain. |
| Admission to higher education | Student residence category | The official student map starts with admission and a study visa, then requires the study-permit evidence. Do not use an employment checklist. |
| Research host or highly qualified offer | Researcher, EU Blue Card, or other named highly qualified category | Match the host agreement or qualified offer to the exact category; ordinary employed-worker evidence is not automatically interchangeable. |
| Family joining a third-country sponsor | National family-reunification permit | Use the official family-member map to test sponsor status, relationship, resources, housing, insurance, and the correct visa/residence sequence. |
| Third-country family member of an EU citizen | EU-law residence document, not the ordinary sponsor route | The Ministry's EU-family page says the third-country family member applies for the residence document within three months of arrival to the local immigration authority. |
| Remote work only for foreign payers | Digital Nomad Visa and residence continuation | The foreign ministry route is for non-EU remote professionals. Confirm foreign-only work, current income proof, insurance, family evidence, and post-entry continuation. |
| Business, self-employment, or company staff | The exact national investment/business/company-staff category | The long-stay form distinguishes company staff and independent financial activity/investment. Do not file a digital-nomad or ordinary employee route for a different business model. |
| Financially independent person | Exact national financially-independent category and matching national visa | Confirm lawful source and stability of resources, insurance, family treatment, and work restrictions with the serving Greek mission before filing. |
| Property or other investment | Exact investor category, including Golden Visa only where its current conditions fit | Property ownership alone is not a generic residence permit. Verify the qualifying investment branch, amount, source, maintenance, family, and filing authority. |
| Existing permit, renewal, or exceptional reasons | Renewal or exceptional-reasons transaction | Confirm existing lawful status, renewal category, deadline, and whether the legal-migration platform supports that transaction. |
This first pass should leave one named permit family, its entry basis, and one official evidence list. If two rows remain plausible, write down the fact that separates them—Greek employer versus foreign payer, third-country sponsor versus EU citizen, study admission versus work, or business activity versus passive investment—and obtain the competent authority's answer before ordering documents. Do not use a broad “Greece residence permit” checklist to mix categories.
Confirm the portal transaction
The Ministry of Migration and Asylum says its legal-migration platform enables third-country nationals or employers to submit residence-permit renewals and applications for exceptional reasons, book delivery appointments, and perform specified seasonal-worker employer procedures. It also links to application-status and e-appointment services.
Do not assume every initial permit can be filed online from inside Greece. Check the route, place of filing, and current Ministry instruction before using the portal.
Build a category-specific upload set
The permit category controls the documents. A useful control sheet lists each official requirement, file name, issuer, issue date, expiry, translation status, and the fact it proves. Check passport, entry or visa history, existing permit, work or study basis, funds, insurance, address, tax and social-security identifiers, and civil-status documents only as applicable.
Keep the original foreign document and official translation together. Names should use one consistent transliteration. Compressing a file must not make seals, signatures, or dates unreadable.
Treat AFM, Taxisnet, and AMKA as separate records
AFM is the tax number; Taxisnet credentials provide access to tax e-services; AMKA concerns social-security administration. They can be necessary in a residence workflow, but none independently proves residence permission. Use the detailed AFM and Taxisnet guide and Greek bank-account guide for those downstream tasks.
While the decision is pending
Save the exact submission receipt, payment record, portal messages, and every later upload. Do not infer travel or work rights from “pending” status; verify them for your category with the Ministry or qualified counsel. If the portal requests a missing document, answer the named deficiency within the stated period and preserve proof.
When the card is ready, use the official delivery-appointment channel. For the broader arrival sequence after status is secure, see Greece expat administration. This page owns the broad initial route-triage decision and the boundary between that legal route and the narrower portal workflow: identify the correct permit family and entry sequence first, then determine what can be submitted online, make the upload auditable, and do not confuse filing evidence with final status.
The digital-nomad branch is one route in a wider market; compare it with the Europe digital-nomad screen before choosing Greece.
