AFM and Taxisnet for Foreigners in Greece: The Correct Sequence
An AFM is the Greek tax identification number recorded by AADE. Taxisnet credentials are the username and password used for myAADE and other digital public services. A new non-resident can request the AFM and Authentication Key together, but the number, the key and an activated account remain distinct things.
Choose the starting path from the record you actually have:
| Current position | Official start | Completion point |
|---|---|---|
| Tax resident abroad with no AFM | Use AADE’s TIN and Authentication Key procedure. The page links the electronic “TIN & Authentication Key” application. | AADE issues the AFM certificate and Authentication Key, and sends them through the stated email or representative channel. |
| AFM exists, but the individual has never registered for online services | Open AADE’s Authentication Key application menu and choose Initial registration. Set the intended username and password, then complete one of AADE’s identity routes. | Receive the Authentication Key and activate the account; retain the confirmation. |
| Authentication Key is already in hand | In the same menu, choose Account activation. | Successful login to myAADE with the activated credentials. |
| Credentials were lost, the account was deactivated or an application is pending | In the same menu, choose Forgot password if the key is still available; choose Re-registration if the username or both password and key are unavailable, or the account was deactivated; choose Recover pending application to change identification method for a completed pending request. | A recovered or re-registered account, followed by a successful login. |
| AFM exists but identity, foreign address or representative data are wrong | Use AADE’s registry-change procedure through myAADE My Requests → Registry → Changes to Natural Person Details. | A corrected registry record before relying on it for banking, a lease, tax or credential recovery. |
New AFM: submit identity and representation evidence together
For a tax resident abroad, AADE says the interested person, legal representative, tax representative or authorized third party submits the request electronically. The AFM application is also a request for the Authentication Key.
Prepare:
- a valid identity document, such as a passport or accepted national ID;
- an authenticated power of attorney or solemn declaration appointing a tax representative, when one is used;
- the representative’s authenticated acceptance declaration; and
- a translated marriage certificate where AADE requires it for the applicant’s record.
The applicant can choose identification at a tax office or by myAADElive video. A representative enters with their own Taxisnet credentials; they should never use the applicant’s future password. If an authorized third party is to receive access codes as well as submit the request, the authorization must say so expressly.
For a person who lives in Greece rather than abroad, use the route shown for that status in the live application. AADE’s myAADElive natural-person page lists identity and lawful-residence evidence for the video-appointment path and says a person with no Greek postal address must appoint a tax representative. Do not use a foreign-resident route merely because the applicant is not Greek.
AFM to Taxisnet: complete the handoff
When AADE processes a new non-resident application, the applicant receives the AFM certificate and Authentication Key by email; representative cases use the delivery channels described on the AADE page. Save both files separately.
If the AFM existed before online registration, choose Initial registration and specify the desired username and password. AADE’s password and myAADElive page confirms three natural-person routes for obtaining the key:
- direct electronic verification, with the key delivered in parts by email and SMS after the stated phone or payment-provider cross-check;
- identity verification by myAADElive video; or
- identity verification in person at a tax office.
These are alternatives, not promises that every applicant will pass the direct cross-check. If the automated route fails, use the video or tax-office option presented by AADE. Once the key is available, return to Account activation and test a full login.
Verify the registry before the next transaction
Keep the AFM issuance certificate, Authentication Key delivery, account-activation confirmation and a current registry extract. Check the spelling of the name, date of birth, identity document, foreign address, email and representative relationship.
For a correction, AADE’s registry page uses form D210 with the relevant identity evidence. A change of tax representative also requires the appointment document and the new representative’s acceptance. If the representative’s AFM does not appear as linked during credential registration, correct the relationship in the Tax Registry before trying again.
Do not make the AFM prove something else
- Banking: the bank still performs its own identity, address, tax-residence and source-of-funds checks.
- Lease: the landlord and tenant still have their own rental-reporting steps.
- AMKA and health cover: social-security identifiers and healthcare eligibility follow separate rules.
- Residence: immigration authorities decide lawful stay and its evidence.
- Tax residence: receiving an AFM does not by itself make someone Greek tax resident.
If a downstream service rejects the record, save the exact message and ask which field failed—not whether the AFM “works.” Correcting the source registry is safer than creating a second application.
After AFM and Taxisnet are in order, compare the rail, FX and delivered amount before funding Greece with the Europe transfer decision guide.
