Germany EU Blue Card Salary Thresholds for 2026: Evidence That Counts

For a Germany EU Blue Card filed in 2026, the official federal portal states a regular gross annual salary threshold of €50,700. A lower threshold of €45,934.20 applies to specified shortage occupations and to recent entrants whose last degree or comparable qualification was obtained less than three years ago. The lower-threshold routes require Federal Employment Agency approval.

Salary is only one gate. The applicant also needs a qualifying credential and a specific German job that generally lasts at least six months and fits that qualification. Use the current official EU Blue Card page immediately before filing because thresholds are adjusted annually.

Identify the threshold before negotiating the file

Use the regular threshold unless the employer can document a lower-threshold category. For a shortage occupation, record the occupation classification and show how the actual duties match it. A prestigious job title is not evidence. For a recent graduate, retain the award date and qualification proof.

If neither category is secure, compare the skilled-worker alternatives instead of stretching the Blue Card rules.

Calculate only defensible remuneration

Start with fixed gross salary under the signed contract. Divide or annualize consistently and account for part-time hours. List bonuses, allowances, equity and benefits separately. Do not silently add a discretionary bonus to cross the threshold.

Ask the employer to confirm:

If pay is close to the threshold, a small fixed-salary amendment is usually a cleaner record than an optimistic spreadsheet.

Show job and qualification fit

Provide the degree or qualifying tertiary credential, recognition or comparability evidence where needed, job description and a short employer note connecting the credential to the core duties. Regulated professions also require the relevant license or evidence that it is in prospect where the official process permits that.

The contract and employer letter must agree on title, duties, hours, salary, workplace and term. Resolve probation reductions, delayed increases or unpaid periods before the appointment.

Build a reviewer-ready packet

Put the following in order:

  1. passport and application documents;
  2. qualification and recognition evidence;
  3. signed contract or binding offer;
  4. detailed job description;
  5. salary calculation;
  6. shortage-occupation or recent-graduate proof if used;
  7. Federal Employment Agency evidence where applicable;
  8. short employer cover note explaining any non-obvious point.

Keep translations and certified copies required by the receiving mission or foreigners authority.

If the number is missed

Do not hide the shortfall or relabel variable pay. The choices are to raise guaranteed salary, correct working hours or classification if genuinely wrong, provide missing lower-threshold evidence, or use another qualified-worker route. Ask the authority for the exact refusal or deficiency reason before re-filing.

A clean file lets a reviewer reproduce the threshold decision from the contract and evidence without guessing.

After the threshold and job evidence pass, place the Blue Card filing inside the Germany pre-arrival and first-90-day sequence.
