Greek Citizenship by Naturalization: Confirm the Current Residence Period

Do not count toward Greek naturalization until you have identified the statutory category. The Ministry of Interior's February 2026 guidance states a seven-year continuous lawful-residence rule for the ordinary route and a three-year rule for specified categories. The residence period is only one condition; the file must also satisfy the current declaration, status, test, integration, tax, and document rules.

Match the applicant to the current period

The Ministry's 30 January 2026 requirements chart is the practical starting point.

Category shown in current ministry guidance Residence period to test Do not infer
Ordinary naturalization applicant Seven continuous lawful years before the application That every residence title or gap counts the same way
EU citizen Three continuous lawful years That EU status removes the remaining naturalization conditions
Spouse of a Greek citizen with a child Three continuous lawful years That marriage alone creates this shorter category
Person with parental responsibility for a Greek child born in Greece Three continuous lawful years That any Greek-child relationship automatically matches the statutory wording

The chart contains other category-specific rules. Use the row that exactly matches the applicant and the current consolidated Citizenship Code, updated through 17 September 2025. The ministry labels the consolidation as informational, so check the cited Government Gazette amendments or the competent citizenship office if the facts sit near an exception.

Build a chronology that can prove the period

List every residence title, issuance and expiry date, renewal filing, address, absence, tax year, employment or business period, and family-status change. Attach the evidence to each interval. A valid card today does not prove seven or three continuous lawful years.

Check whether the particular residence title is accepted for the route, how timely renewal filings are treated, and whether an absence or undocumented interval interrupts the count. Resolve those questions before paying fees or ordering a large civil-document bundle.

Prepare the other naturalization elements

Use the Ministry's citizenship directorate hub and supporting-document page for the current declaration, competent office, forms, status documents, and category-specific evidence. Foreign birth, marriage, divorce, and name-change records may need legalization or apostille and official translation; align every name transliteration before filing.

The Ministry publishes a citizenship test resource book but warns that it was prepared under a previous legislative regime and may not cover everything raised in an interview. Use it to study, not as the current legal checklist. Organize tax, employment or business, education, family, language, and other integration evidence requested for the actual category.

File only after the category is locked

  1. Select the exact category in the 2026 ministry chart and current code.
  2. Obtain the current checklist from the competent citizenship office.
  3. Reconcile residence, absence, tax, and civil-status chronologies.
  4. Complete the applicable test or language step.
  5. File through the specified authority and retain proof.
  6. Answer additional-document requests by the stated deadline.

The guide to Greek residence permits for third-country nationals covers predecessor residence administration. Citizenship is a separate decision. This article also makes no universal dual-citizenship conclusion: verify Greek law and the other nationality's law for the individual case.
