Term Life Insurance Cost in Germany: Current Benchmarks and Quote Method

There is no reliable “average” German life-insurance price for an individual. A term-life quote depends on the death benefit, policy length, age, health, smoking, occupation, dangerous activities and underwriting. Two people seeking the same payout can receive very different offers.

Term life insurance is useful when another person or a debt depends on the insured income. It pays a benefit on death during the term; it is not an investment account.

Use current examples as orientation, not a quote

The following CHECK24 comparison snapshots were current in July 2026. Each figure is the average monthly contribution among the five cheapest results in that comparison. Within each row, the age, occupation, death benefit and 20-year term stay fixed; only smoking status changes.

Illustrative profile Non-smoker for 10 years Non-smoker for 1 year Smoker
Age 30, IT occupation, €150,000 level benefit, 20 years €4.17/month €5.23/month €9.55/month
Age 45, office occupation, €300,000 level benefit, 20 years €31.34/month €43.65/month €94.39/month

The same July 2026 page showed a provider spread on one fully fixed example: for a 27-year-old office worker, non-smoker, €250,000 level benefit and 15-year term, the cheapest displayed annual contribution was €51.23 and the most expensive was €161.29—about €4.27 to €13.44 per month. That is a defensible orientation range for that profile only.

These are bounded market snapshots, not premiums a reader can claim. The two rows are not an age comparison because the occupation and benefit also change. They do show why an “average German price” is unsafe: even on otherwise identical inputs, smoking status materially changes the output.

To isolate the other drivers, save a series of quote snapshots and change one field at a time:

Driver Keep fixed Output to record
Age benefit, term, occupation, health and smoking contribution at the applicant's actual age; never infer it from a different profile
Health every non-health input standard price, surcharge, exclusion, postponement or refusal from a preliminary risk assessment
Occupation age, benefit, term, health and smoking the price and occupational class using the exact duties, not only a job title
Term benefit and all personal facts prices for the shortest term that covers the dependency and for a longer stress case
Smoking all other inputs both smoking definitions and prices; the July 2026 examples above show the controlled comparison

For budgeting, retain the highest credible monthly contribution from the controlled set, not the cheapest advertising figure. Also record both the current payable contribution and any higher contractual maximum shown in the offer.

Set the need before requesting prices

List the mortgage or debts to clear, years of income support, childcare or education needs, existing savings and other death benefits. Then choose a benefit and term that match that exposure.

A decreasing benefit may fit a repayment mortgage. A level benefit may fit family income protection. For two partners, compare separate policies with a structure that pays when the household actually needs funds.

Keep every quote comparable

Use the same:

Record whether the premium is guaranteed and which circumstances allow changes. A low headline price is not comparable if the benefit falls faster, the term is shorter or important facts have not been underwritten.

Answer underwriting questions accurately

Insurers can ask about diagnoses, treatment, medication, tests, disability, smoking, occupation and hobbies within specified periods. Answer the exact question using medical records where needed. Do not omit a condition because it seems minor.

If an application may lead to a denial or exclusion, consider an anonymous preliminary risk inquiry through a qualified intermediary rather than sending inconsistent applications. Confirm how personal data will be handled.

Expats should also ask about accepted addresses, language of documents, time abroad, relocation, beneficiaries overseas and payment from a foreign account.

Review the contract, not only the premium

Check the beneficiary designation, exclusions, duty to report changes, claim evidence, cancellation, conversion options and what happens if premiums stop. Store the application answers with the issued policy.

The German consumer organization’s term-life guidance frames the product around protecting dependants and debts. That reader need should remain the reason for purchase.

Recheck cover after a mortgage repayment, birth, separation, major income change or move. Do not cancel old protection until replacement underwriting is complete and the new policy is in force.

A useful price comparison therefore starts with a bounded benchmark and ends with a range of real, fully underwritten quotes on identical facts—not a generic monthly figure copied from someone else's profile. For the household’s compulsory and optional policies beyond term life, use the broader insurance guide for expats in Germany.

For a relocating household, schedule any life-insurance decision after the mandatory status, address and health tasks in the Germany 90-day checklist.
