Luxembourg City Bulky-Waste Collection Before Moving Out

Luxembourg City's bulky-waste service is a booked, paid collection for unwanted household items such as old furniture, bed frames and mattresses. For someone clearing a home before moving, it offers a way to dispose of items that will not go to the next address. But it is not an unsorted house-clearance service: the City excludes some large objects and several materials that can easily end up in the same move-out pile.

This guide covers the City of Luxembourg's household service, not a nationwide collection scheme. Before arranging a date, separate the items the City lists as acceptable from those that need another disposal route. Then book against the date you need the home cleared—not an assumption that everything left outside will be taken. The City's collection conditions and bulky-item list are the starting points.

Sort the load before you request a pickup

The important distinction is not simply whether something is too big for a bin. Its material, contents and size also matter.

What you are clearing What to do before booking
A mattress, bed frame or old furniture These appear on the City's accepted list. Check the size exclusion below before treating a particular item as eligible.
An object exceeding 1 m³ The City lists this as excluded. Describe the item and give its dimensions when contacting the department; ask what arrangement is appropriate before moving it outside.
A mirror or glass pane These are excluded from bulky collection. Keep them separate and ask for the appropriate disposal route. Do not assume they can accompany a piece of furniture.
Boxes or bags filled with mixed household rubbish These are not bulky waste. Adding them to a furniture collection does not make them eligible.

These are selected move-out examples, not the complete acceptance list. The City's full list also excludes construction waste, hazardous substances and other materials.

There is a potential trap with a large sofa or wardrobe: furniture is listed as acceptable, but objects exceeding 1 m³ are not. Do not resolve that tension by assuming that all furniture qualifies, or that dismantling automatically makes an excluded object acceptable. Give the Sanitation Department the details and let it confirm the route.

For example, imagine your move-out load is a mattress, a large wardrobe, a mirror and two bags of mixed rubbish. It is not one ready-to-collect pile. The mattress belongs on your proposed bulky-item list; the wardrobe needs a size check; the mirror and rubbish need separate arrangements. Sorting on paper first lets you ask one useful question about each item before carrying anything downstairs.

Book around the handover date

To arrange collection, contact the City's Service Hygiène, or Sanitation Department, at [email protected] or 4796-3640.

The City says it can generally provide the service within five working days of receiving a request. Collections run Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, between 06:00 and 14:00. That is a normal service indication, not a guaranteed appointment before your key handover. Ask early enough to obtain a confirmed date and deal with items the service cannot take. Official booking information

A useful request is more specific than “I need some furniture removed.” You can adapt this message:

I am clearing a home at [address in Luxembourg City] before [handover date]. I would like to arrange bulky-waste collection for [item list, with dimensions for large items]. I also have [items whose disposal route is unclear], which I have kept separate. Please confirm which items you can collect, the available date, the charges and where I should place them. Please advise if a different service is needed.

The published collection instructions describe placing waste on the sidewalk or at the edge of the property. If you need furniture carried out of an apartment, make that a separate question; do not treat the standard collection price as a quote for removing furniture from upstairs.

Budget for weight, but check size separately

The published bulky-waste fee is €20 per collection for up to 100 kg, with additional weight charged at €0.20 per kilogram. For an illustrative accepted load weighing 150 kg, that calculation is €20 + (50 × €0.20) = €30. It is an example using the published tariff, not a quote for your load. City collection fees

The weight allowance and the size exclusion answer different questions. A light but very large object does not become acceptable just because the whole load weighs less than 100 kg. For a full home clearance or renovation, the City specifically asks residents to contact the department in advance to discuss the appropriate disposal service.

Put accepted items out only for the agreed collection

The earliest permitted time is 18:00 on the evening before pickup. Place the waste on the sidewalk or at the edge of your property without obstructing or endangering passers-by. The moving van's departure is not the trigger for putting everything outside; the agreed collection date is.

If you need to cancel, email the Sanitation Department by 09:00 on the business day before pickup. Keep that cutoff with your booking details, especially if someone may take the furniture instead. These timing and placement conditions come from the City's on-request collection page.

Is the Resource Centre a workable alternative?

The City's Resource Centre on rue du Stade offers a free drop-off option for residents of Luxembourg City and Strassen, subject to its acceptance and access rules. It is not an unlimited fallback for everything a booked collection excludes: the City says it accepts only small quantities of bulky waste, under 1 m³ in volume, and waste must be sorted in advance. Resource Centre rules

Before loading a vehicle, check these practical conditions:

If your load is close to the volume limit, contains excluded materials, or depends on getting a rented van admitted at a particular time, confirm the plan before setting off. The useful fallback is a verified disposal route—not a second trip with the same unsorted load.

For a move-out, finish with three decisions settled: which items the City has agreed to collect, what will happen to the rest, and when both routes fit before your handover. That is more reliable than booking “bulky waste” and hoping the label covers the whole room.
