Hungary Residence Permits: Choose the Route Before Enter Hungary

Hungary does not have one generic residence application. Choose the legal purpose from the real facts first; only then decide whether the initial application belongs at a foreign mission, in Hungary, or in Enter Hungary. The route also determines whether family reunification, Hungarian work, or an in-country change of purpose is possible.

Use a bounded route-selection table

The immigration authority updated these route factsheets in March 2026.

Route Fact pattern and decisive evidence Initial channel to verify Important exclusion
Employment A specific Hungarian employment relationship; employer and job evidence must match the selected employment subcategory Route page controls whether to use a foreign mission or an allowed in-country/electronic process Do not assume an ordinary employment permit supports family reunification; the current family page lists sponsor categories that are excluded
Study Full-time study in the qualifying institution or preparatory program, plus admission, funds, insurance, and accommodation evidence Verify visa requirement and lawful in-country eligibility on the study page A study permit is listed among the sponsor statuses that do not support family reunification under the current family route
Family reunification A qualifying sponsor and family relationship, with sponsor status checked before documents are ordered Follow the family page for the applicant's location and visa status Employment, guest-worker, White Card, study, training, traineeship, and voluntary-service sponsors are among the listed exclusions
White Card Remote work for an employer outside Hungary or work through a foreign company, with no Hungarian gainful activity or Hungarian company share Verify mission versus lawful in-country filing on the route page No family reunification; no Hungarian gainful activity; no in-country application for another purpose during or immediately after this status
Guest self-employment Genuine independent remunerated activity or executive activity supported by contracts, business evidence, means, insurance, and accommodation Route page controls the initial filing location Family reunification is unavailable during the first year; the status also carries change-of-purpose and long-term-residence limits

These rows are screens, not complete checklists. A researcher, EU Blue Card applicant, Hungarian Card applicant, guest worker, or investor should use that exact category instead of forcing the facts into one of these five.

Sequence five common applications

Hungarian employee: identify the precise work subcategory; obtain the employer/job evidence; use its permitted filing channel; attend biometrics or interview when requested; then report address and handle tax and health records.

Student: confirm that the course and institution qualify; align admission, tuition, funds, insurance, and accommodation; file through the route's channel; then keep institution and address records current.

Family member: check the sponsor's exact permit before relying on the relationship. If the sponsor category is excluded, do not file a family application that cannot succeed. If eligible, align civil-status, sponsor, support, accommodation, and insurance evidence.

White Card applicant: prove the foreign remote-work structure and required resources, and document that no Hungarian work or company ownership will occur. A spouse or child needs an independent lawful basis because this route does not support family reunification.

Guest self-employed applicant: prove actual independent activity rather than only company registration, and plan around the first-year family restriction and the route's change limits.

Use Enter Hungary for the process it actually supports

The official Enter Hungary guidance explains that specified applications and notifications can be submitted electronically, while consular applications and special cases cannot be initiated there. Uploading does not remove a required personal appearance. Save the submission confirmation and respond through the official case channel.

After filing or approval, follow the immigration authority's reporting-obligations page for address, accommodation, employment, and other reportable changes. Do not treat an uploaded lease as proof that every address duty is complete.

Keep identifiers downstream

A tax identification number, health-insurance record, and bank account do not create residence eligibility. Their procedures are downstream and depend on the person's actual work, tax, and insurance basis. The previously cited NAV page was inaccessible during review, so this guide does not state a tax-ID procedure from it; obtain current instructions directly from NAV for the person's facts. TAJ entitlement and contribution responsibility should likewise be confirmed separately.

The safe order is: route, decisive evidence, correct filing channel, personal appearance, decision, address reporting, then tax and health administration. If the sponsor status, work model, or filing location is uncertain, stop at that row instead of using Enter Hungary as a generic application generator.

If the Hungarian route considered is the White Card, first compare its remote-work function with the Europe digital-nomad route screen.
